Meeting Minutes January 19, 2019

EAA Chapter 1167

Old Business:

• Fall fly-in Oct 27^th report available pilots flew 24 Young Eagles.

• We voted that Ron be added to the checking account to back Duane up on the account.

• Anyone interested in touring with the B-17 this spring contact Larry to get on the list.

• Discussed the James Ray Scholorship. The Chapter is to nominate students and if the Chapter is selected then the money is delieved in April with the expectation that the student completes their PPL by year end. 

  • We voted to participate and support the scholarship. Larry offered to donate a headset.

New Business:

• Christmas dinner is planned for December 2^nd at Bimini Oyster Bar and Seafood Cafe; meeting at 5:00pm.

• Voted to procure Chapter name tags for all current members. - Jesse to make the order.

Main Discussion / Tech Talk:

• New arrival procedures for AirVenture next year.

• Oshkosh is in discussion about the need for ADS-B out in 2020. With the volume of traffic they don't know that it would provide any value. Sun-N-Fun may be a different story.

• Aerial Solutions is looking for A&P mechanics

• Doug brought in his Stratux build. He noted that the Raspberry PI 3B+ will not work. Only the 3B will work right now but there are people working to expand the software. He also noted that the system requires 3 amps so pay attention to the charger or battery pack that you buy.

• Doug disassembled the box to show all the contents and how to connect the system to the phone using the wifi network interface.

• Another “gotcha” is the fan connection, black to the outside. Otherwise the fan turns backwards and doesn’t cool your processor.

• Software download from Stratux and the SD card needs at least 4GB.

• The Raspberry PI didn't come with a heatsinks but will be needed to keep the system cool and working properly. Be careful not to get the cheap heatsinks that use double sided tape, those don't transfer heat well. There is a special heatsink compound that will bond the heatsink to the processor and conduct heat effectively.

• Doug added a short extension cable for the GPS antenna connection (USB) so he doesn't have to deal with the 6ft antenna cable all the time.

• He also found a USB power cable with an in-line switch to cut power to the unit when it needs to be rebooted.

We also discussed the ADS-B out wingtip option from SkyBeadon as well as some other low cost (relatively speaking) solutions. Lots of discussion about what is required and the sign-off / testing requirements for approved use.
